Background:
The aim of the present study was to retrospectively analyse results of TPE in patients transferred to our hospital for severe acute hypertriglyceridemia.
Methods:
TPE was carried out using centrifugation with intermittent flow methodology the Haemonetic PCS to separate plasma from blood. The anticoagulation of a heparin bolus followed by citrate infusion during the session. Substitution was performed with 5 %, 10 % human albumin solution, fresh frozen plasma and elektrolyte. 10-20 ml of 10 % Calcium gluconate were administered per liter of plasma protein substitution fluid.
Results:
We performed a retrospective analysis of 12 patients who underwent TPE during 2000-2005 may. Blood samples from all patients exhibited the characteristics features of lactescent and creamy appearance. In a total of 18 TPE sessions, on average 2040+242 ml of plasma (i.e., about 1 patients plasma volume) were treated per session. On admission, the mean triglycerids (TG)and total cholesterol (TCH) levels were 5625,4+2447,8 mg/dl and 833,6+571,6 mg/dl, respectively.
Diabetes mellitus was an underlying condition in 7 patients.
History of alcohol consumption prior to this event was traced in 1 patient.
Conclusion:
In summary TPE sufficed to substantially the bulk of triglycerids in acutely exacerbated hyperlipidemia sindrome.
